A sequence of images whose common thread is the memory of the human species, the memory we carry within us, and which, when prompted to surface in consciousness, gives rise to associations—sometimes very remote, as remote as the history of intelligence, sometimes recent, relating to contemporary cultural institutions. Thus, fossils of memory, like viruses hydrated by the encounter with something capable of nourishing them, come back to life and become fully effective.
